U.S Swimmers Were Not Robbed,Brazilian Authorities Revealed
The four American swimmers who claimed to be victims of robbery in Rio were the ones causing troubles that night and fabricated the account of the incident, according to report.
The robbery that was or wasn't has become the biggest spectacle outside of the Olympic venues in Rio, casting a shadow over American athletes amid an otherwise remarkable run at the Summer Games. The ordeal was also a blow to Brazilians, who for months endured scrutiny about whether the city could keep athletes and tourists safe given its long history of violence.
The swimmers including twelve times Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte damaged a bathroom door at the gas station before returning to the athletes village early on sunday,The New York Times Reported.
"Unfortunately, the swimmers told one lies after another,"a Brazilian police official who reviewed the video image from the scene told Times."we have been able to confirmed that there was no armed assault. "
"No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed," Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso said during a news conference.
Two of the swimmers,Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were pulled off a plane late Wednesday to be questioned by police on Sunday's incident at the gas station, where the men said they were robbed.
Police source said,U.Sswimmers damaged the bathroom led to 'altercation'.
Their teammate,Jimmy Feigen, has remained in Brazil and his cooperating with the authorities along with Bentz and Conger, said U.S Olympic spokeman Patrick Sandusky.
Sandusky in a statement on Thursday said that,Bentz Conger and Feigen were "cooperating with authorities"and determining a time and place to speak further with the police.
The swimmers could potentially face punishment — probation, suspension, a fine or expulsion — under USA Swimming's code of conduct. It was not clear if the swimmers would face criminal charges, though police said the athletes could be charged with destruction of property, falsely reporting a
crime or both.
"All are represented by counsel and beig appropriately support by the USOC and the U.S consulate in Brazil,"Sandusky said.
Lotche spoke with authorities before leaving Brazil to state this week.his lawyer earlier said he gave the police a statement as representative of U.S state department, U.S Olympic committee and FBT observed.lotche signed a statement to testify to its truthfulness ,his attorney added.
Brazilian judge Kyla Blanc de cnop said both Feigen and Lotche gave contradictory account of the robbery, according to the court's statement.the men also said that the robbery took place on their back from a club, which they left at 4:00am,but security video showed them leaving at a different tines, the judge said.
De cnop added that Lotche told police that there was one robber, while Feigen said there were more, one of whom had a gun.
Telephone interview on Wednesday night that he returned Rio earlier that day,and no one told him he should stay in Brazil.
Lotche said he already told authorities he will cooperate.
Lauer said he told Lotche that skepticism that his story may have been fabricated but the swimmer balked at that suggestion.
"He strongly denied that, said it's absolutely not the case,"Lauer said.
